Exclamation My kind of town: Bergama

Bergama is a city and its depending district in Turkey, in northwestern Anatolia, 16 miles from the Aegean Sea, about 100km north of Izmir, located on a promontory on the north side of the Bakircay river with a population of about 55,000. The ruins of the ancient city of Pergamon or Pergamum lie to the north and west of the modern city.

Bergama is historically famous for the antique city of Pergamon and for its traditional quarter made up of old Ottoman houses. It is also famous for its cotton, carpets, and gold production.

Quote:
Sara Sharpe loves Bergama for its archaeological treasures and fascinating history.

Why Bergama?
I first visited in 1982 and wrote in my diary: "My favourite place yet, hills and broad silvery plains, delights without number…" Despite its acropolis, archaeological treasures and fascinating history, Bergama is untroubled by mass tourism. Tour buses come for the day, then go away. If you're into clubbing, don't read on.

Where would you send a first-time visitor?
To the Akropol (acropolis), but before the tour buses. It's an amazing site, full of ghosts, inhabited since ancient times. Don't miss the Temple of Dionysus, well preserved and with a beautiful profile; nor the extraordinary theatre, the steepest in Western Anatolia, with seating for 10,000.

Me too Lor!

For years I've had a list of all the wonderful places I have to visit in Turkey, I'm gradually making my way through them but Cappadocia and Istanbul are now top of my list.

According to the myth.

There was 3 great library in the history.

1) Iskenderiye Library ( Egypt )
2) Celcius Library (Ephesus)
3) Pergamon Library (Pergamon)

According to the myth

Pergamon exported the paper (papyrus) from the Egypt. But when they started to war with Egypt, They could't export the paper anymore so They produced their paper from sheep skin. Thay called that paper Parchment. So te name od the city came from that paper

Sightseeing Places at Bergama

* Acropolis
* Roman Theatre ( as you see at the picture it is the most steep theatre in the world but its view is wonderfull )
* Zeus Temple (It is displayed at Berlin Museum in Germany. On its side wall depicted a war between gods and the gigants)
* Asklepion (It was one of the best hospital in the ancient preiod. At the entrance of the compex was written that The death never comes in )
* Serapion Temple ( It was built by Emperor Hadrianus to dedicated to the greek god Serapis. Origin of the Serapis comes from Egypt )
