Default Turkey's headscarf ban challenged

Turkey’s prime minister has challenged a ban on women wearing Islamic-style headscarves in universities and public offices, it was reported today.

The attempts to lift the ban have alarmed secularists who fear the government is raising the profile of Islam in the traditionally secular country.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the ban could be lifted even before a proposed constitutional amendment.

He insists that lifting the headscarf ban is merely a question of individual liberty, but the country’s secular establishment - including the military - regards it as a political statement aimed at undermining the nation’s secular principles.

Breaking News.ie

What's your opinion on this??? I really believe that everyone should have the choice to dress how they feel appropriate. I think it's unfair to impose a ban of the sort upon anyone.

Wasn't this why we had the marches during the election. People were scared that these things would creep in

Exactly...if this is true then they were right, their fears are being realised.

having chatted with hubby tonight on this subject, I really dont see why the women or girls should not be allowed to wear their headscarves in Uni and Colleges etc which is what hubby says the issue or rule is about...

I think its personal choice, some people wear a cross, or crucifix, or a Turban for examples.... its their choice to wear it or not...

I agree, people should be allowed to wear what they want, they're not harming anyone.

I didn´t think wearing a head scarf had anything to do with Islam, it´s not in the Koran is it?

It´s a doube edged sword for me, I can´t really say for or against.

Last summer I noticed a lot more women in Kusadasi wearing headscarves.
