The three-day International Local Governments' Peace Conference began in Nevşehir's Cappadocia district on Monday, bringing together nongovernmental organizations and mayors from around the world to discuss ways they can help in the establishment of peace.

The conference, the result of a cooperative initiative by United Nations Habitat, the Nevşehir Municipality and the Local Governments' Association, began with the singing of the Turkish national anthem.

“Peace, a mystical word, is hard to realize. We are here to give substance to that word. Local governments suffer the most from warfare. No one asks us if we want war. We are here to show the world that local governments have a voice in this respect,”
