Head-to-head: Turkey and the EU


Barring last-minute hitches, the EU is set to open membership talks with Turkey on Monday 3 October. The talks may not succeed and, even if they are successful, they will continue for many years. Many in Europe believe Turkey should never join the EU; others think it is key to Europe's security. Here, a senior French parliamentarian, Pierre Lequiller, and the head of a European think-tank, Giles Merritt, present opposing views.
