Default Don't abandon Turkey, EU told

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw urged his European counterparts -- meeting Sunday for crisis talks on Turkey -- not to abandon Ankara but to go forward with EU membership talks as planned.

Straw said he understood the concerns of Austria, which fears the EU may not be able to absorb the large, poor and overwhelmingly Muslim nation of 70 million. But he said the European Union made Turkey a promise: to discuss membership if Ankara meets key entry conditions.

I was watching this on the news tonight, Jack Straw had an hour long meetng with the Austrian minister and then all the foreign ministers had a meeting over dinner. Im a little anxious as to how its gonna turn out! But Austria at the moment seems to be the main opponent!
