If Turkey joins such an EU, it would make the union a far more outward-looking global player than if enlargement halted at the Balkans. Turkey brings experience and involvement in the Middle East and central Asia. It would also bring a huge contribution to any common European security policy, with its large army and long military tradition.
The EU is a serious economic rival of the US, carrying as much clout in world trade negotiations. But it cannot compete in foreign policy and security terms because of internal divisions and lack of military capacity. With Turkey on board 10 or 15 years hence (it would take so long to finalise negotiations), the EU could be a far more serious global power. |
