Hillside Houses in Ephesus opened for visitors with new pathway.
![]() The committee for the Protection of Izmir made a decision to construct a pathway for tourists. Thanks to YTL 400,000 provided by the Culture and Tourism Ministry, the pathway will be opened with a ceremony today (June 21 - 2006). The seven sections of the Hillside House: Section 1: The first section of the Hillside House is the ceremonial section. Here the protagonist of Greek theater writers Menandros' "New Comedy" and Euripides' Orestes, and sister "Elektra" are seen. Various theatrical scenes are displayed on 18 clipboards. Among the very colorful paintings the fight between Heracles and the river god Achelous is described. On the ground are mosaics. A bronze African head, which enriches the Selçuk Museum, and a matchless ivory relief, which depicts the eastern war of the Emperor Trajan, were unearthed here. A painting in which someone holds a bow and arrow stands out on the wall of the room. Section 2: The glass mosaics depicting Dionysus and his wife Ariadne, with mythological sea creatures and the Nereid, on the ground of the nine-column courtyard, reflect the desire of the host to fascinate his guests. Sections 3 and 5: Important wall frescoes of these sections depict the nine muses that inspired various branches of art such as theater, music and literature. In addition, portraits of Sappho -- the renowned female poet of ancient times -- and the god Apollon -- the protector of art -- as well as those depicting various philosophers are among the outstanding wall frescoes of these sections. Section 4: A fresco of the famous philosopher Socrates was repaired and strengthened before it was removed and transported to the Selçuk Museum, where this matchless remnant of Roman art fascinates visitors. Section 6: The identity of the builder of the Hillside House was deciphered in this room. The ground base covers 900 square meters. An epitaph belonging to the priest of Dionysus, C. Flavius Furius Aptus, was passed down to our age. Section 7: Marble busts of Lavia, the wife of Roman Emperor Augustus, their sons, Emperor Tiberius, a bronze snake and the Zeus Eagle, now on display at the Selçuk Museum, were unearthed in this section.

You have to pay an additional entrance fee to the hillside houses, on top of the normal Ephesus enterance fee.
