The Kurban Bayram (Feast of the Sacrifice),takes place every year, at a different date, which depends on the moons position.
(this year 21 Jan ) This part of the culture may be shocking to foreign guests and if you are an animal lover it may be better not to go on a holiday to Turkey during this time. The festival celebrates the Biblical and Kur'anic account of Abraham's near-sacrifice of his son Isaac on Mount Moriah, proving Abraham's complete obedience to God. In the story, God stays Abraham's hand at the last moment and provides a ram for sacrifice instead, praising Abraham for his faithfulness. Following this tradition, the head of each Turkish household hopes to sacrifice a sheep on the morning of the first day of the holiday period. A lavish meal is made from the meat, friends and family are invited to feast, and the excess meat and the hide are donated to charity. (or given to less fortunate members of the village) It is a major public holiday and many shops and businesses will close, perhaps for a week. |

Kurban-bayram comes about 17 days after the Ramazan and lasts for 4 days. Claire has said it all, but I thought I might add this:
Things you are supposed to say: Allah nice bayramlar nasip etsin. – May God give you a lot more feasts/ May God let you celebrate for a long time. Bayramınız kutlu olsun. – Could be translated as Happy holiday/feast. Bayramınız mubarek olsun. – May your feast be blessed. İnşallah sağlık ve esenlik içeresinde daha bayramlarda görüşürüz. – May God let us see eachother in good health at a lot more feasts. İyi bayramlar! – Good holiday! Nice bayramlara. – A bit difficult to translate. The closest thing to it is “May you celebrate a lot more bayrams!” |
