Default School Trip Crash

I have spent the whole weekend in tears after hearing about this tragedy.

A school trip for Primary 2 children from a school in Izmir to see Cappadocia ended only 10hrs later when the coach they were travelling in hit a lorry ,which was filled with sand, head on. 33 people died, some were mothers and their children, siblings from the same family, a teacher; it was heartbreaking watching the news.

Yesterday they held a funeral service for 18 of the dead in Konak Square, Izmir.

Here's a report from Sabah newspaper

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased.

Alison

They held a special service in seferihisar for 3 of the deceased yesturday..3 teachers. I can't believe how devastating this has been for Turkey, it really has shocked the nation. It's a terrible tragedy.
I'm certain we'll soon see some road awareness campaign, and not before time ; these traffic accident deaths are so uneccessary, if people would just slow down and pay more attention.
It's time to start taking driving seriously in Turkey.
please drive safely everyone,
Charlotte

I wouldn't bank on it teosgirl. The saga of coach crashes in Turkey has been an ongoing one for many, many years. Hardly a month goes by without another fatal coach crash, and as far as I can see nothing is done to improve driving standards of the coach drivers, or maintenance & supervision standards for the coach operators.

I truly do not understand why the Minister of Transport is not held responsible for this situation.

In the meantime, I strongly recommend anyone who intends to travel anywhere in Turkey by coach to use only the most reputable coach companies, such as Varan, Kamil Koc, etc., who are every bit as reliable as the best companies in the UK.

They take longer to get you there, (and proud of it!) but they get you there. They're also a bit more expensive than other companies, but they're worth every kuruş.

I have a copy of a police video showing my mother in law crawling out of a crashed coach which overturned after the driver had been repeatedly told by the passengers to slow down.

He didn't. Five people died.

Be careful.
